Celebrating 132 Years: Rockhampton Girls Grammar School's Foundation Day Extravaganza

Updated: Apr 18

It was a day filled with nostalgia, celebration, and community spirit as Rockhampton Girls Grammar School commemorated its 132nd birthday with a spectacular Foundation Day Assembly. The event, held on the school grounds, was a testament to the institution's enduring legacy and the profound impact it has had on generations of students.

The festivities commenced with a captivating historic classroom reenactment, led by Principal Kara Krehlik, who stepped into the shoes of Mrs. Helen E Downs, the school's founding figure. Prefects took on the roles of the pioneering students, transporting attendees back in time to the school's humble beginnings. The reenactment served as a poignant reminder of the vision and dedication that have shaped the school's history.

Following the reenactment, the energy soared as students engaged in a spirited Kahoot competition. Team Kollar emerged as the champions, showcasing their knowledge of the school's storied past and traditions.

However, the highlight of the day was undoubtedly the beloved Gold Coin Spiral tradition. Students, staff, and alumni joined hands, encircling Paterson House and laying their gold coins as a symbol of unity and commitment to preserving the school's heritage. The Gold Coin Spiral epitomized the strong bond between the school and its community, reinforcing the sense of belonging and pride that permeates the campus.

In addition to being a celebration of the school's history, the event also served as a fundraiser, with $1391.20 raised for Upper Luck Refurbishments and the ongoing restoration of Paterson House. The generosity of the community was a testament to their dedication to preserving the school's legacy for future generations.

The morning concluded with the time-honored hat toss and school war cry, further solidifying the sense of camaraderie and tradition that defines Rockhampton Girls Grammar School.

The Foundation Day Assembly was a poignant tribute to Rockhampton Girls Grammar School's enduring legacy and the profound impact it continues to have on the lives of its students and the broader community. As they celebrate 132 years of excellence, the school looks forward to the adventures that lie ahead, guided by a deep appreciation for their past and a vision for a bright future.
