Over the school holidays, Charlotte, Cadence and Bria attended the Medical Health Adventure experience at The Brisbane Mater Hospital, where they gained an insider’s view of the healthcare profession and medical pathways after school. Hear what they had to say:
“Throughout the experience we were guided through various medical practices, including taking and interpreting vital signs and listening to chest sounds on our own stethoscopes. One of the standout moments was when we had the opportunity to hold a human placenta just hours old and practised delivering a baby through a manikin simulation, offering a rare and unforgettable hands-on experience.
Throughout the day, we sharpened our practical skills in medical procedures including suturing wounds, dressing injuries, and performing intubations. There was also a session focused on precision with laparoscopic surgical instruments, introducing us to the intricate techniques surgeons use in minimally invasive operations. This hands-on approach allowed us to not only understand medical procedures but also gain confidence in executing them under supervision.
We also got to perform an operation on a medical manikin, where we had a chance to be a part of patient monitoring and being a part of the surgical team removing foreign objects. This allowed us to practice our teamwork and skills with medical equipment while developing our skills of taking appropriate action in unpredictable scenarios/emergencies.
In addition to the technical training, we had the chance to meet practising healthcare professionals who provided insights into the challenges and rewards of their careers. We also had the opportunity to meet assistance dogs in training who had just completed their exams.
This experience offered us a glimpse into potential career pathways after school, showing us the diverse and rewarding opportunities available in healthcare. It highlighted the critical role of medicine in improving lives, while showcasing the skills, dedication, and lifelong learning required in the field, sparking our excitement to peruse a career in medicine after school. “
