Girls Grammar Teams Back-to-Back Volleyball Champions and Red Rooster Carnival

Interschool Volleyball Champions

After a very strong showing in the interschool volleyball competition, two of our three Girls Grammar teams made their respective semi-finals on Tuesday. The junior team played in the A division semi-final against Heights College while the senior team, who were also in the A division semi, played against Grammar. Both teams were dominant, winning in straight sets and continuing their undefeated season.

The teams then backed up to play their Grand Final straight afterwards. The juniors came up against a very tall St Ursula’s team and while we watched them having a quick hit prior to the game, the girls were a little nervous at their high skill level. Our girls pushed the nerves aside and stuck to their team processes to take out the grand final in an emphatic straight sets win (25-13, 25-15, 25-11). Thanks to Mrs Shaw for sharing coaching skills this season.

The senior team came up against their arch nemesis North Rockhampton High School. Every year it seems to be Girls Grammar v North Rocky in the senior girls grand final. We started strong taking out the first two sets, but North Rocky pushed us right to the end of the third set. They left their run too late and Mr Fuller’s girls were able to hang on and take out the win (25-15, 25-15, 25-23).

While both teams have won back to back premierships, and both teams did it without losing a single set throughout the whole competition, special mention goes to the senior girls who have now been RDS champions for four straight years. Great work to all our girls on such great achievements!

Red Rooster Touch Carnival

The Red Rooster carnival is always a highlight of the touch year as teams come from all over CQ to compete. This year had a record 138 teams participating, that’s a whopping 396 games over two days.

This year the conditions were much cooler than previous years, with nice overcast, breezy conditions. Our three RGGS teams played hard in every game; it was great to see all the happy, smiling faces enjoying themselves playing in the true spirit of the Red Rooster Carnival. It was pleasing to see new faces out there enjoying the team atmosphere alongside our experienced club players.

The highlight of the weekend was the RGGS Swifty’s team playing a drop off in their Division 4 grand final. This is the first drop off many of our girls have ever played, so it was an exciting experience. They finished 8th out of 19 teams in the Open Girls division.

RGGS Polywonga’s, in the 10 years girls, had a tough weekend with only six players. They played with great sportsmanship and were always positive. It was great to see their improvement across the weekend.

RGGS Rattle Snakes, in the 14 years girls’ division, played in the Division 6 grand final. This game was a very tight battle, and our girls did a great job with half of their team still being eligible to play in the 12 years division.

A huge thanks goes to our amazing coaches across the weekend. Thanks to Mrs Goltz, Mrs Housman, Mr Borg and Mr Fuller for helping me across the weekend; without these volunteers the weekend would not have been possible. Thank you also to the wonderful parents for coming along and supporting your girls.
