National Youth Parliament
We are incredibly proud of Year 11 student Lilian Pointing, who recently represented Capricornia as a Youth Member at the inaugural National Youth Parliament in Canberra.
This prestigious opportunity brought together young leaders from across Australia to experience the workings of democracy firsthand. During the program, Lilian had the privilege of meeting Her Excellency the Honourable Sam Mostyn AC, Governor-General of Australia, as well as the Honourable Milton Dick MP, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and attending an address by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
A highlight of the experience was participating in the unfurling of the Australian flag atop Parliament House, a moment Lilian describes as both inspiring and unforgettable.
Throughout the program, Lilian delivered three speeches in both Old and New Parliament House, participated in debates on mock legislation, and presented on a national issue important to young Australians. These experiences provided valuable insight into the parliamentary process while helping to develop her confidence, leadership and public speaking skills. Beyond the formal proceedings, Lilian formed lasting friendships with like-minded young people from across the country who share a passion for democracy, leadership and positive change.
Lilian also acknowledges the support and mentorship of the Honourable Michelle Landry MP, whose guidance throughout the process was greatly appreciated.
Reflecting on the experience, Lilian described the National Youth Parliament as a "priceless opportunity" that she will remember for the rest of her life. Congratulations, Lilian, on this outstanding achievement and for representing both Capricornia and Rockhampton Girls Grammar School with such distinction.
