Rockhampton Girls Grammar Finals Fever: Touch Football, Volleyball and Futsal

Touch Football Finals

Another great touch football year is almost at an end with both our Junior and Senior teams heading into finals. Junior Grand Finals will be played on Friday 10 November for the 14 Years division and Saturday 11 November for the 8 Years, 10 Years and 12 Years teams.

The senior competition has seen great development as a good crop of young players made the transition from juniors into ladies touch this year. The C grade team missed out on a finals berth, but their improvement in game structure throughout the year has been great to see. Grace Cumner and Clare Hills took their development one step further and added refereeing to their repertoire. Both girls did a fantastic job throughout season 2 and are constantly getting compliments on their officiating from players, and as a referee, this is the greatest compliment you can receive. Well done girls!

Congratulations go to the Gold team who won their semi final in the B grade ladies competition against Grammar Opens. The semi was a tough game with both teams displaying feats of speed and skill to save tries. A flying Sophie Shaw could be seen cutting across the field with a diving effort to stop a certain try after a half field break away. It was a grinding battle and both teams worked hard and put their bodies on the line to keep the other out.

While the attack was great, the defence from both teams was exceptional and we stayed locked up 0-0 for the majority of the game. Finally, a diving Charlie Mallyon broke the deadlock with a try off a newly rehearsed set play to take Girls Grammar up 1-0. With only three minutes left in play, the girls defended their hearts out to maintain their lead. It was all cheers at full-time as we were through to our first preliminary final in years.

The preliminary final was a tough game against Primetime, an opposition we hadn’t been able to overcome all season. Try saving feats came from Ava with some great positioning to stop a diving attempt and Pamela with a scrambling recovery to shut down a two on one overlap. In attack, we shifted the ball nicely to see Sophie streak away to score. Another strenuous game saw an end-to-end battle as we went into half time with a 1-all draw.

Primetime came out after the half time break and scored two quick tries to give them some breathing room. We hit back through a great sweeper as Tyla found herself in space and casually crossed for try number two. We came close to the line several times through Catherine, Bria and Pamela. With only five minutes left in the game, another try saving effort saw a head clash between Ella and Dale, thankfully both girls were fine, however this ended their night. Our girls fought gallantly, but it wasn’t to be, Primetime were the victors 5-2. Well done on a great season girls, I am one proud coach!

Interschool Volleyball and Futsal

The last rounds of the interschool volleyball and futsal competitions were played this week. While our futsal girls have played well and developed quickly in a short space of time, finals berths were not in the cards for either Junior or Senior teams this year.

In volleyball news, two out of three teams have played their way through to the semi-finals with undefeated seasons thus far. The Senior B team had a lot of laughs and were really there for a social outing each week, in this they were very successful.

The Semi-Final and Grand Final matches will be played on Tuesday afternoon, 7 November.

The Junior A team will play at Yeppoon SHS coming up against Heights College in the Semi-Final at 4.15pm. If successful, they will then play at 5.00pm in the Grand Final against the winner of Yeppoon SHS and St Ursula’s.

The Senior A team will play at North Rockhampton SHS against RGS in the Semi-Final at 3.30pm and if successful will then play the Grand Final at 5.00pm against the winner of Rockhampton SHS and North Rockhampton SHS.

Let’s get out there and support our girls who are hoping to win back-to-back titles in both divisions.
