Art Meets Architecture: RGGS Launches Dual Refurbishment Project

Rockhampton Girls Grammar School is set to embark on two exciting refurbishment projects that will enhance both the creative learning experience for students and the historic charm of our campus.

Following recommendations from Tony Madden Architects, the Art Room Refurbishment and Paterson Verandah Stage 1 works will be tendered together as a single project. This approach will not only encourage competitive pricing but also ensure efficient site coordination and minimal disruption to school operations.

The Art Room Transformation

The Art Room is about to receive a stunning makeover designed to inspire creativity and collaboration. The refurbishment will include:

  • Brand new flooring and windows to create a bright, modern aesthetic and capture the Rockhampton skyline.

  • A redesigned entrance for improved access and flow.

  • A fully upgraded storeroom, featuring viewing windows into the main classroom to support supervision and engagement.

  • A new wet area for art cleaning and preparation.

  • Two flexible teaching spaces equipped with upgraded IT, lighting, and air conditioning.

  • Modern, purpose-built furniture to enhance functionality and comfort.

This transformation will provide students with a contemporary, well-equipped space where their artistic talents can truly flourish.

The Paterson Verandah Restoration

Equally exciting is the refurbishment of the Paterson Verandahs, which form part of one of the school’s most iconic heritage buildings. The project will include a full rebuild of the verandah outside the HR Office and the main front entrance, as well as restoration work on one of the eastern wings of Paterson House.

In keeping with Queensland heritage restoration standards, the verandahs will be carefully restored to reflect their original 19th-century design, featuring:

  • Reinstated timber posts and balustrades, complemented by decorative cast iron lacework panels to bring back to open-style verandahs that mirror the building’s early architecture.

  • Restoration of timber posts, latticework, and decorative trims that celebrate the craftsmanship of the era.

  • Full structural upgrades to ensure the longevity and safety of these much-loved heritage spaces.

  • Repainting in historically accurate tones to preserve the authenticity and timeless charm of Paterson House.

These improvements will not only protect the integrity of our heritage buildings but also provide a more welcoming and historically authentic environment for students, staff, and visitors.

Building on Our Legacy

Together, these projects represent a balance between innovation and tradition, revitalising spaces for modern learning while preserving the school’s rich architectural history.

The tender process is now underway, and we look forward to sharing further updates as the project progresses. Once completed, these refurbishments will mark another exciting chapter in the ongoing evolution of Rockhampton Girls Grammar School’s beautiful campus.
