From Alumni to Inspiration: 'Old Girls' Share Career Journeys

Earlier this term, Rockhampton Girls Grammar School was thrilled to welcome back several inspiring alumni who generously shared their career journeys with current students. These visits offered a powerful reminder of the diverse pathways available after graduation and the importance of resilience, curiosity, and dedication.

One of the highlights was the return of Mackenzie Buchanan, now pursuing a law pathway at the University of Melbourne. Speaking with our Legal Studies students, Mackenzie offered valuable insights into university life, student accommodation, and the journey to studying law. In an honest and engaging conversation, she spoke about the realities of moving interstate and the excitement of experiencing life beyond Queensland. Her message was both practical and empowering, reminding students that there are many pathways to university - even if their final ATAR isn’t what they initially hoped for.

Mackenzie encouraged students to stay curious, explore different opportunities, and consider universities beyond the familiar. Her visit was a timely reminder of the importance of open-mindedness and the many possibilities that await after school. We thank her sincerely for her time, generosity, and inspiring words.

Adding to the excitement, former student Camryn McPherson connected with students over Teams to share her journey from our classrooms to life on base with the Australian Army. Now proudly studying with the Army, Camryn’s story lit a fire in many, proving that dreams backed by dedication can absolutely come true. Her experience highlighted the value of discipline, commitment, and the unique opportunities that come with military education and service.

Another standout moment came when Bridgette Williams delivered an insightful and inspiring talk about studying Medicine at James Cook University. Bridgette began by sharing practical advice on how to approach medical interview questions, explaining not only what kind of questions to expect but also how to structure answers in a clear and confident way. This guidance was particularly valuable for our Year 12 students, many of whom are beginning to prepare for their own interviews.

Bridgette also gave a detailed overview of what it’s like to study Medicine at JCU, including her placement experiences in rural Queensland. These opportunities allowed her to gain hands-on experience, work closely with doctors, and connect with communities that often have limited access to health care. Her stories painted a vivid picture of the challenges and rewards of practicing medicine in rural and regional settings.

She reflected on the importance of balancing study with personal life, acknowledging the challenges but emphasising strategies that helped her maintain wellbeing and stay motivated.

Bridgette also shared her experiences living at John Flynn College, describing the supportive community, lasting friendships, and how campus life has enriched her university journey.

We are deeply grateful to Bridgette for her time and openness. Her willingness to share her personal journey and advice made her talk highly relatable and encouraging, offering valuable guidance to students considering a future in Medicine.

These alumni visits have left a lasting impression, reminding us that the paths from Rockhampton Girls Grammar School lead to remarkable places. Their stories continue to inspire the next generation to dream big, work hard, and embrace every opportunity.
