Girls Rock 2023 Takes Center Stage to Celebrate Another Show-Stopping Year for Girls Grammar!

Another year and another hugely successful night at Girls Rock 2023! Each year, Girls Rock showcases a huge number of acts across the performing arts by girls from Prep – Year 12, and this year was no exception.

Hip Hop Crew opened the show and set the tone for a high energy event! This year, we were lucky enough to showcase the choreographic talents of some of our performers, with different sections choreographed by Claudia Heffer, Carrie Mtize, Tayla Williams and guided by Miss Harwood. It’s so great to see (and hear!) the audience appreciate the hard efforts put in by our performers.

The Primary School performed in two choirs, led by Ms Dawes and accompanied by Ms Bond. These costumes were a real highlight of the night. I spotted lots of sheep, some bananas and a Mario backstage, just to name a few! There were impressive dance solos from Willow Jones and Emily Schafer, and one of my personal favourite performances of the night, the awesome magic show by Amity Johnson, Harper Spencer and Sophia Wall from Year 4. It was great to see a few primary acts auditioning this year, and I encourage primary girls to try out again next year!

Performance groups across the school were well represented during the evening. Show Team polished their boots for a fun dance performance. Young Playwrights made us all laugh. Bella Voce and Molti Voce showcased some truly beautiful harmonies. The Dance Company sold papers and played a deadly game of Cluedo. The senior music class band, Funky Dream and a Pinch of Rock, rocked the house with their performance. Concert Band gave a memorable Michael Jackson medley performance, with surprise moonwalking by Catherine Wiltshire. Sonny Urbanek’s fabulous trombone dancing stole the show!

The solos and small group acts were again outstanding to watch. It is great to see so many talented girls show off their skills in music, dance and drama. A big congratulations to all who shone onstage on the night. Keep working hard, and let’s make next year just as amazing!

Many students were looking forward to finally finding out the musical for next year. The rumours were not at all as accurate as last year’s! As usual, it was announced to great excitement by the 2023 musical team. In 2024, the school musical will be ‘Legally Blonde Junior’, performed at McKeague Hall.

A huge thank you to all staff members who participated in our Barbie themed Staff Act this year. From Mrs Housman who worked with us to create our awesome dance section, to Mr Borg, who truly left nothing on stage as Ken. It was worth spending so many extra hours to see that reaction from the crowd.

As usual, the celebration and final performance by the Year 12 cohort was the crowd favourite. This year’s choreography was pretty spectacular, well done girls! What a great way to finish your schooling years!

Another huge thank you to Megan and Hadasshah – our 2023 Head Girls, who made fantastic hosts for the evening. They really just ran with it, and I particularly appreciated their help each time I had to tell them “just fill, and give us some time!”

Thank you also to The Arts team at Girls Grammar who give up countless hours for both rehearsal and helping backstage to ensure the show runs as smoothly as possible. We are already making plans for next year.

Congratulations to all on an incredible evening!
