Today our girls celebrated R U OK? Day. The R U OK? campaign focuses on raising awareness of how one simple question, “Are you okay?” may lead to a conversation that changes someone’s life.
After losing his father to suicide in 1995, Gavin Larkin began work on a documentary to promote the importance of checking in on the people we love and care for. Sadly, Gavin passed away from cancer in 2011, but his legacy remains with the R U OK? movement continuing to support people with the skills and confidence they need to help those who may be struggling with life.
This year’s message was ‘Are they really okay? Ask them today.’ I have seen many instances where our girls have supported each other in this way and it is always heartening to see.
Today we acknowledged the event with activities co-ordinated by our Senior Student Council. These included Odd Sock Day, collection of gold coins for donation to R U OK?, ball games and dancing in the CAB area, complimentary Zooper Doopers for attendees, construction of a giant sunflower using hand templates on which the students wrote their names and the most popular event with our younger girls - face painting.
It was obvious that everyone involved had a great time and I would like to thank all students and staff who assisted with this worthwhile event.
