Last weekend saw teams come from all over CQ to battle it out for touch supremacy at the annual Red Rooster Touch Carnival. This carnival always displays the best in sporting spirit as there are teams that have an exceptional level of competitive skill and strategy, and teams that are there for the social aspect, who love a good dress up.
Unfortunately, we didn’t win the competition for the most colourful team, but with our crazy socks and funky shorts, we definitely gave the other teams a run for their money. RGGS Young Guns were a sight to see with their crazy socks and colourful tutu’s.
The strong RGGS spirit could be heard around the grounds with our war cry ringing out loudly, especially after the 12yrs girl’s finals as two RGGS teams went head to head.
In the 10yrs, RGGS Polywonga’s went through to the division 3 Grand Final against the Gladstone rep team. The future is looking bright for this team as the majority of players have another year in this age division.
In the 12yrs, RGGS Navy and RGGS White came up against each other in the division 4 Grand Final. After some great diving efforts and length of the field runaways, RGGS White came out victorious.
RGGS Gold in the 14yrs division had a good mix of experience and fresh faces to the touch scene, which served them well as they made it through to the division 4 Grand Final. There were some great diving touches to save tries and some excellent wraps in attack to create scoring opportunities.
In the 17yrs division, RGGS Daisies showed some real class throughout the weekend, but due to an extremely hard pool they unfortunately missed out on a Grand Final birth. RGGS Young Guns played in the division 5 Grand Final. Unfortunately, the opposition was just too strong, and we had to settle for runner up.
We finished with donuts and snow cones before packing up the tents and heading home.
We would like to thank Mrs Goltz, Mr Borg, Mrs Curtis, Abbey Fenton, Mrs Doherty and Mr Fuller for giving up their time to coach teams on the day and help supervise the girls. Carnivals like this would not be possible without the fabulous support of these volunteers.
