Transitioning to Rockhampton Girls Grammar

During the last week of school, students in Prep to Year 6 will participate in Transition Day. All students, including new enrolments, will be given the opportunity to spend time in their 2023 classrooms and get to know their teacher for next year. Here at Girls Grammar, we believe this is a valuable step in ensuring students feel comfortable in their new surroundings and hope to alleviate some of the concerns students may be feeling.

2023 Prep students attend for the morning session with Miss Spence. Students will engage in hands on activities and have a small play in the playground. For some students, this is the second time they have been at school as the Prep to 3 Tea Parties also provided an opportunity for familiarisation.

Students in Year 1 to Year 6 for 2023 will participate in Sisters groups and experience the connections established throughout the whole school. They will be able to meet new people which may make starting at a new school less daunting. They will then head to their classroom for next year with their 2023 teacher. The teachers have some exciting activities planned.

As the Year 6 cohort begin high school, they will spend the day with our current Year 7 classes. Again, this allows students to familiarise themselves with the School as a whole. Being a Prep to Year 12 School, we have the advantage of students already traveling to specialist classes with specialist subject teachers in other classroom settings.

Transitions are an important part of growing up but it may come with some challenges. The experience with transitioning to another school, class or teacher will be different for all students. Change is something that some children embrace as others will find it quite scary and daunting.

For primary students, their main concerns may be around friendships which may have been formed over many years as classes change with students departing and new students arriving. This may impact existing friendship circles as children find they are trying to establish their place in the group. There are many ways families can support these changes some of which are by identifying when support is required, and where to access this support.

According to Beyond Blue services, students who experience a positive start to transitioning to high school are more likely to:

  • feel comfortable, relaxed and valued

  • feel excited and motivated to learn

  • have good relationships with others

  • develop a sense of belonging within the school community.

Our School has many buffers in place to help students overcome some of these challenges throughout the year. Each year level has a Care teacher/s to help students to navigate their year. This person is the first port of call should any student require any assistance. Our Transition Officer, Mrs Veronica Miller-Waugh, also helps the High School students to find their feet in relation to academic expectations. Along with the High School Care Teachers, she works with students to help them further refine the balance between academic excellence and personal and social wellbeing.

We look forward to working with you all in 2023 and would welcome contact in relation to the transition that awaits your daughter/s as this school year ends and a new school year begins.
