A Word from our Acting Principal - A Week of Preparations

It has been a week of preparations for our girls over these past five days. Final rehearsals were held during House meetings on Wednesday morning before the much-anticipated Inter-House Choir performances at next week’s assembly.

Students in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 have been focusing on revising content prior to next week’s assessment block. I would like to wish these girls all the very best for their weekend ahead of study and revision and for their assessment over the following week. As Dr Fry has mentioned on assemblies and his newsletter articles earlier in the year, remember to engage your positive study habits, limit distractions and be mindful of procrastination and things that may take your focus away from the task at hand.

Year 11’s who have applied for a leadership position in 2022 have been notified of progressing to the next stage in the application process with their leadership interviews scheduled for next week. These girls have been asked to begin their interview with a short introduction about why they are applying and the qualities they would bring to the role of Prefect in 2022. Brooke and Hannah our current Head Girls and I look forward to meeting with each applicant and hearing about their leadership potential. Good luck to all the girls who are participating in interviews.

This weekend prior to leadership interviews our Year 11s celebrate their Semi-Formal on Saturday evening on McKeague Deck. This special event is a time for the girls to socialise with one another and their guests while enjoying some lovely food and drinks prepared by Kent and his amazing catering team. Thank you to all the staff who are generously donating their time to help in the lead up to this event and who will be assisting on the night, and to Ms Anger for her photography. I would like to acknowledge and thank the Semi-Formal Committee for the confidence and maturity they have shown in organising the event while liaising with their cohort, staff and external providers in preparing for their Semi-Formal.

Next Thursday, 26 August, at 8:30am is our Primary Book Week Parade. Mrs Goltz shared information with Primary families this week regarding this exciting event that occurs every year. It is during this week we commonly refer to as Book Week where we celebrate books and Australian children’s authors and illustrators. The theme this year is Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds and students are encouraged to come dressed as their favourite character and bring along the book they have chosen their costume from. I am sure this weekend will be filled with costume designing and creating by the girls (and I think quite a few Parents, Grandparents or other family members).

On Wednesday evening I had the pleasure of attending the August meeting of the Zonta Club of Rockhampton. Zonta began over 100 years ago when a small group of pioneering women came together in Buffalo, New York in the year 1919. Their vision was to help all women realise greater equality while using their induvial and collective expertise in service to their community. Their vision became Zonta International, an organisation that has grown to more than 30,000 women in 63 countries, working together to make gender equality and reality for women and girls worldwide. While in attendance I heard about the 2022 Zonta Rockhampton’s Young Women in Public Affairs Award. This award is open to any woman aged 16-19 years of age on 1 April 2022 who demonstrates the following criteria:

  • Active commitment to volunteerism/ community service

  • Leadership in a civic area such as local or student government or a workplace

  • An understanding of Zonta International and its programs

  • Sharing the views to support Zonta International’s mission of empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy

I encourage any young RGGS women to apply for this award which is presented at the Zonta Women’s IWD Breakfast on 1 April each year. I will be sharing further information with students early in Term 4 about the application process, criteria and judging as applications close early in Term 1 on 18 February 2022.
