Agriculture is a highly popular subject at Rockhampton Girls Grammar School. The program is innovative, providing our girls with opportunities to access the latest industry research and innovations and agricultural experts. We have established partnerships with our local businesses and industry such as Central Queensland University, Fitzroy Basin Association and Department of Agriculture, as well as local cropping farmers and livestock producers.
Last year, our agriculture classes commenced the construction of an outdoor learning space, including garden beds to incorporate small crops such as vegetables and herbs, potted colour and also companion planting and harvesting yields. Fruit trees are providing a long-term environment and learning opportunities as well. In 2021, the plot has seen further development through the installation of a new irrigation system and later this year further planting will occur as students implement the theoretical learning they are gaining in the classroom.
This outdoor learning space project received assistance from Rockhampton Regional Council’s Community Assistance Program – Environment and Sustainability Scheme. The program is very reliant on the generosity of our community, and we are grateful to Rockhampton Regional Council for their funding towards this project.
Agriculture at Rockhampton Girls Grammar is multi-dimensional and we look forward to developing it even further in the second half of 2021.
