Brains, Buzzers & Brilliant Effort: RGGS Teams Take on Rotary Trivia

On the 21 of July, I travelled to South Rockhampton State School to support the RGGS Junior Rotary team (Year 10), consisting of Umna, Matilda, Rebecca, and Lillian. The girls were one of ten teams competing for the winning title. It was fantastic to watch as they confidently answered questions about history, literature, biology and mathematics during the group round. They then advanced to the buzzer round, where they faced off against Glenmore State High School to score as many points as possible. The girls did an amazing job, and I’m so proud to have witnessed their first competition. I’m sure they’ll return even stronger next year.

The following day was the senior competition, which I participated in alongside Paige, Davena, and Molly. Drawing from last year’s experience, we were determined to do our best and make it to the second round and we did! We powered through the group stage and the 'Beat the Buzzer' round against The Cathedral College, winning by a close score of 18–17. This secured us third place out of the ten competing teams.

Paige, Davena, and I then returned to the stage to face Heights College in the semi-finals. We answered a range of challenging individual questions, from geography to biology. Although we put up a strong fight, we trailed slightly in points. We gave it our all in the second buzzer round but ultimately finished in third place.

Despite that, we were incredibly happy with our improvement from last year. We also received a $100 prize for the school, generously provided by the Rotary community.

I highly recommend this competition to anyone interested. It is a fun and exciting trivia night to enjoy with friends!
