Cummins: Powering Careers in Diesel and Beyond

ree

WHAT IS CUMMINS

During our recent class session, we gained valuable insight into the career pathways available at Cummins South Pacific, a global leader in diesel manufacturing. The presentation introduced us to their apprenticeship programs in heavy commercial diesel technology, electrical, and automotive sales. These programs offer nationally recognised qualifications, hands-on training, paid travel, and opportunities to volunteer in community events, which helped us understand the variety of options available in the mechanical and engineering industries.

One of the most inspiring parts of the session was hearing from a presenter who shared his 23-year journey from apprentice to workshop manager. His story showed us how practical experience, teamwork, and being open to different roles can shape a successful career. We also heard from Anita, a customer service adviser, and other staff members who highlighted the supportive culture at Cummins, including the flexibility to move between departments while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. For many of us, the presentation sparked a deeper interest in mechanics, as some of us have family members in the trade and have always been drawn to mechanical work. Learning that first-year apprentices can earn around $26 per hour made us realise the financial and practical appeal of this pathway. Although some of us are planning to attend university and are considering careers in medicine and engineering, this session reminded us that career paths don't have to be linear. It encouraged us to stay curious, ask questions, and remain open to opportunities that align with our passions and strengths.

WHAT WE LEARNT

Cummins South Pacific is a leading provider of diesel and natural gas engines, specialising in equipment for heavy industry, power generation, and related parts. As the largest diesel manufacturer globally for buses, trains, and trucks, Cummins offers a wide range of On-Highway engines suitable for trucks, buses, light commercial vehicles, and integrated power systems.

For students considering a hands-on career path, Cummins offers robust apprenticeship programs that blend practical experience with formal education. Apprentices typically work 7.5 to 8 hours per day, with occasional opportunities for overtime and highway-based assignments. As they progress, many transition into field service technician roles. Importantly, Cummins covers the cost of TAFE training, ensuring apprentices gain nationally recognised qualifications without financial burden.

There are three main apprenticeship streams available: Heavy Commercial Diesel Technician, Electrician, and Automotive Sales. Each pathway leads to a full trade qualification and includes access to Cummins’ PARTY program, which supports personal and professional development. Apprentices receive uniforms, all necessary personal protective equipment (PPE), and a starter toolkit to begin their journey. Product-specific training is also provided to build technical expertise.

Beyond the workshop, Cummins encourages community engagement, offering consistent opportunities to volunteer in local events and fundraisers - making it a well-rounded experience for young professionals.
