I-MED Radiology
In April 2025, I completed a three-day work placement at I-MED Radiology Centre at Mater Hospital in Rockhampton, where I had the opportunity to shadow a range of healthcare professionals including nurses, radiologists, radiographers, and sonographers. The staff were welcoming and guided me through various sections of the clinic, explaining the different imaging techniques such as MRI, CT, X-ray, ultrasound, esophagram, and nuclear medicine. I was struck by the precision and professionalism with which each area operated, and gained a deeper appreciation for the complexity and specialisation involved in radiology.
This experience significantly enhanced my understanding of both the technical and human aspects of healthcare. I learned about the importance of patient care, confidentiality, and communication, especially through conversations with patients in the waiting room. Observing procedures under the CT machine highlighted the critical role of advanced imaging in diagnostics and treatment. Overall, the placement confirmed my passion for a career in health and inspired me to pursue further opportunities in clinical settings. I highly recommend such experiences to students considering healthcare careers, as they offer invaluable insight into the field and help clarify personal interests and professional goals.

CQ Radiology
During my recent placement at CQ Radiology, I had the chance to observe how medical imaging is used to support patient diagnosis and care. Over several days, I watched procedures including ultrasounds, X-Ray, MRI scans, CT scans, and obstetric sonography, where specialists use ultrasound to monitor the development of unborn babies. It was impressive to see how accurate and detailed these images are, and how much they help guide clinical decisions.
One of the most eye-opening moments was watching a neck injection guided by imaging. These procedures demand serious precision, and it was clear that every movement was planned and controlled. The radiologist used real-time visuals to guide the needle exactly where it needed to go, highlighting how important imaging is for both diagnosis and treatment.

I also had the opportunity to look over completed scans alongside the radiographers and sonographers. They walked me through what to look for in different types of images: pointing out fractures, fluid buildup, tumours, and other markers. It was a great way to connect the imaging process with the medical reasoning behind it.
This experience gave me a better understanding of how much happens behind the scenes in medical diagnostics.

Hillcrest Hospital
Over the school holidays, Aysan and I were fortunate to spend three days completing work experience at Hillcrest Hospital. This immersive placement offered us firsthand insight into the fast-paced, collaborative world of healthcare, and allowed us to observe a wide range of medical specialties and procedures.
Across the three days, we rotated through several departments including Post-Surgery, the Surgical Ward, and Theatre. I observed an orthopaedic surgeon performing a hip replacement and knee scopes, as well as an anaesthetist at work during an ACL repair. These procedures highlighted the precision and teamwork required in surgical environments and deepened my interest in perioperative medicine.
During our placement, we also gained exposure to a variety of hospital departments such as Admissions, Theatre, Recovery, Pharmacy, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Dental Surgery, and Emergency Care, with the opportunity to observe clinical procedures including CPR, patient monitoring, and the management of complex cases. These experiences helped build understanding of the inner workings of a hospital and reinforced the critical role that multidisciplinary teams play in delivering patient-centred care.
In theatre, Aysan observed a keyhole shoulder replacement and a dental surgery, gaining insight into both surgical techniques and patient aftercare. One of Aysan’s highlights was following a patient's journey from surgery through to recovery. Speaking with the patient post-operation—after observing her shoulder replacement—offered a powerful reminder of the human side of medicine. Aysan also recognised several patients from her pharmacy job, adding a personal touch to her experience and allowing her to further develop her communication skills.
This placement was an incredibly valuable opportunity for both of us, helping to confirm our aspirations in the healthcare field. We are extremely grateful to Hillcrest Hospital and the staff who welcomed and guided us throughout our time there.
