From Plot to Plate: Students Growing Sustainability at Girls Grammar

At Rockhampton Girls Grammar School, sustainability is more than just a buzzword, it’s something our students are living and breathing every day. A wonderful example of this is happening right in our very own agricultural plot, where students have been nurturing rows of fresh produce, including glossy purple eggplants and sweet cherry tomatoes.
Through patience, care, and hands-on learning, the girls have seen their hard work come to life in the form of thriving plants, harvested at their peak and proudly delivered straight to our school kitchen. There, our catering team transformed the homegrown produce into a vibrant vegetable medley - one that was not only delicious but also a true celebration of paddock-to-plate living.
This initiative highlights the power of small steps in creating a more sustainable future. By growing our own food, we reduce food miles, minimise waste, and give students a sense of ownership over what goes onto their plates. More importantly, it connects learning to real-life outcomes, showing that sustainability is something we can all contribute to in meaningful ways.
The smiles on our students’ faces as they saw their produce served at mealtime said it all, this is more than a project, it’s a movement towards a healthier, greener future. And it all began with a seed.
