Girls Rock 2024 was yet another spectacular celebration of talent, creativity, and passion, showcasing the amazing performing arts skills of our students from Prep to Year 12. This year’s event was a resounding success, brimming with energy, artistry, and heartwarming moments.
The Hip Hop Crew opened the night with an electrifying performance that set the tone for an unforgettable evening. A special highlight was the choreography by Year 12 student Carrie Mtize, who created the routine herself – a true testament to the remarkable talent within our school. The enthusiastic applause was well-deserved and reflected the dedication of all our performers.
Our primary school students shone brightly, with two choirs led by Ms Dawes and accompanied by Ms Bond, delighting the audience with creative themes like ninjas on a quest and kids dodging chores. The confidence displayed by Prep and Year 5 students in their class performances was inspiring, while dance solos by Willow Jones and Keeley Abbott, along with Prep student Freya Coldwell’s special performance, left a lasting impression. Savannah Richards’ heartfelt rendition of 'Never Enough' brought Ms Dawes to literal tears, demonstrating the emotional depth our younger performers can achieve.
Performance groups across the school delivered standout acts. Show Team wowed with their fun partner work and boot-scooting routine, while Bella Voce and Molti Voce captivated with stunning harmonies in 'Man in the Mirror' and 'For Good'. Dance Company showcased versatility with a 'Mean Girls' musical number and a high-energy hip-hop performance of 'Conceited'. The senior music class band rocked the stage, 'Fall Out Boy' style with 'Centuries', and Concert Band made a heroic effort with their rendition of 'The Incredibles'.
Solo and small group acts were equally impressive, showcasing the immense talent of our students. A big congratulations to everyone who stepped onto the stage and gave it their all – your hard work truly paid off.
One of the evening’s most anticipated moments was the announcement of next year’s musical. With help from select audience members, the musical team revealed that the 2025 production will be 'Moana Junior' – an exciting choice that we can’t wait to see come to life.
The Staff Act was another showstopper, with teachers bringing down the house in their 'revolting' Matilda-themed performance. From Mrs Krehlik’s intimidating Miss Trunchbull to solos by Mrs Housman, Mrs Doherty, Ms Simpson, and Ms Hooper, and Ms Miller Waugh’s hilarious 'spelling skills demonstration,' it was a crowd-pleasing moment that demonstrated our staff’s commitment to making the night unforgettable.
The Year 12 cohort closed the show with their final performance, a crowd favourite that left the audience in awe. Their spectacular choreography was a fitting farewell to their schooling years – congratulations, girls!
A special thank you to Kara-Lee and Georgia, our 2024 Head Girls, for their outstanding hosting skills. Their ability to keep the crowd entertained, even when asked to 'fill time,' was truly commendable.
Finally, a huge shoutout to the dedicated arts team at Rockhampton Girls Grammar School. Your countless hours of rehearsals and behind-the-scenes work ensured the show ran smoothly. Plans for next year are already underway, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store.
Congratulations to everyone involved in Girls Rock 2024 – you’ve made us all incredibly proud. Here’s to another fantastic year of performing arts!
