Heroes in Health and Business 2024: Exploring Career Pathways with JCU

Heroes in Health 2024, is a joint collaboration between James Cook University and the Mater Hospital – held at the Rockhampton Mater Hospital on Tuesday 30 July.

Year 12 student, Indiana embraced the opportunity to learn about career pathways in the Health industry.

Students visited the operating theatres, Cath Lab and maternity ward (both groups got to see a placenta), toured the hospital, learnt about Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy activities and participated in the Pharmacy Webster Packing activity.

Students also heard from professionals including doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and pharmacists about their profession in the healthcare industry and their career journeys so far.

Four students from Rockhampton Girls Grammar School attended the Heroes in Business Program - a joint collaboration between James Cook University and the Queensland Country Bank. Congratulations to Ralema, Mia, Paige and Lydia. The Heroes in Business Program was held at the Rockhampton Leagues Club, Cambridge Street, Rockhampton on Wednesday 4 September and provided a combination of hands-on experiences and information sessions from a range of professionals currently working in the business, commerce and law sectors.

This one-day program provided participants with valuable insights into essential business principles through engaging mock activities designed to simulate real-world scenarios encountered in business development. Key topics of discussion included effective marketing strategies, overcoming communication barriers, making ethical decisions, risk management, securing financing, and addressing legal considerations.

Some of the activities included a negotiation exercise in which participants were organized into three groups: CEOs, Finance, and Marketing. The objective of this assignment was to ensure that each group fulfilled its designated tasks. This involved negotiating financial decisions, including establishing timelines for how funds would be allocated and utilized. After an intensive session lasting almost one and a half hours, the Marketing group received the least amount of funding, while the Finance team secured over two million dollars, with CEOs coming in a close second.

Another activity involved dividing participants into groups of four, with each member assuming a distinct role (Human Resources, Chief Executive Officer, Finance Manager, and Marketing Manager). Each group was tasked with developing a fictional company and subsequently presenting their concept to their fellow peers.

Overall, this program provided a valuable experience that equipped us with essential knowledge to support our future careers while also creating new friendships.

JCU Ambassadors – Medicine

This year, representatives from James Cook University (JCU), including 2023 Alumnus Bridgette Williams, visited Rockhampton Girls Grammar School to provide insights into pursuing a career in medicine. The primary campuses are situated in Townsville and Cairns, offering both online and on-campus course options depending on the specific subject and program. A range of scholarships are available; however, prospective students are advised to research the different scholarship types and their eligibility criteria thoroughly.

To apply to James Cook University, candidates must submit three letters of support and participate in an interview, which can be conducted either online or in person and typically lasts between ten and thirty minutes.

The medical course spans six years and does not require the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT). The curriculum includes extensive practical and hands-on learning experiences, such as 4,000 hours of clinical training and various clinical placements. Additionally, the program offers diverse placement opportunities in rural areas, depending on the year of study.
