On the 29 and 30 of July, Summer, Aysan and I took part in the two-day Heroes in Health program, run by Mater Education and James Cook University at the Rockhampton Mater Hospital. Alongside 19 other students from across Central Queensland, we explored a wide range of health careers, and the roles involved. We learnt from professionals including Flight Nurses from the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Dietitians, Physiotherapists, Pharmacists, a Theatre Nurse, Obstetrician, Midwife, and Surgeon.
Day 1 began with a session from pharmacists explaining how elderly patients use Webster packs and how medication combinations assist with administration. We visited the physiotherapists in the hospital and learnt how they help patients after surgeries. A Flight Nurse from RFDS shared insights into the qualifications and experience required - including midwifery, emergency medicine, and aviation knowledge, such as applying Boyle’s Law when calculating patient weight. We also practised suturing skills on pig feet using forceps with the help of a surgeon.
The Heroes in Health program was an incredible opportunity to confirm career interests in health or explore new possibilities. I encourage all Year 11 and 12 students to apply next year, it’s an incredibly valuable experience and a great way to build friendships.
