Rockhampton Girls Grammar School: Food and Textiles and Hospitality End of Term Wrap-Up

It has been a busy Term 2 in the Food and Textile and Hospitality Department – from cooking an array of Food Truck style meals to investigating healthy eating in schools.

In Food and Textiles this term, the Year 7 class developed a recipe for a healthy and appealing muffin. This muffin was then baked in class and taste tested by three special guest judges, Mrs Krehlik, Dr Fry and Ms McKelvie. The girls had a wonderful term in the kitchen cooking a selection of muffin recipes, both sweet and savoury. Throughout the term the girls developed not only their cooking skills within the kitchen, but investigated healthy eating and why it is important for school-aged children to eat a balanced and healthy diet.

The Year 8, 9 and 10 Food and Textiles classes were tasked with designing a business proposal for a Food Truck business, including the design of a logo, uniform, internal and external design of the truck itself, menu, and promotional flyers. Throughout the term the girls were exposed to cooking a variety of Food Truck style meals, each meal unique in the skills development and preparation and presentation steps. This unit was very well received, and the girls thoroughly enjoyed the design aspect within the subject this term.

In Year 11 and 12 Hospitality, students continued their Cultural Study and spent the term developing and refining their skills in the kitchen looking at and preparing dishes from different cultures. A highlight this term was learning how to make frappe’s and making coffee’s from the coffee machine, and delivering to staff.

A big thank you to our Teacher Aide, Ms Walker, for her help and facilitation in the kitchen this term.
