Rotary Club of North Rockhampton Secondary School Quiz: RGGS Junior Team Shine in First Appearance and Senior Team Reach Finals in Thrilling Challenge

Junior Team

This year, Paige, Lydia, Davena, and Molly attended the junior section of the annual Rotary Club of Rockhampton North Secondary School Quiz for the first time. They participated in rounds and were asked questions to a variety of categories from general knowledge, maths, geography, history, and sport. The girls competed against North Rockhampton State High and won 14 – 13. However, they did not make it to the semi-finals due to the limited number of points gained. Overall, this was a wonderful experience and is great for people that want to gain more confidence. This team will definitely return again to compete next year!

A big thank you to Ms Miller-Waugh for organising the team and helping us to a successful first round.

Senior Team

On Tuesday 16 July, three of our Year 12 students, Bethany, Harriet and Jessica attended the annual Senior Rotary Club of Rockhampton North Secondary Quiz Challenge. This competition is based around challenging young minds and testing the local youth on general knowledge and current world events. With questions focusing upon the arts, sciences, languages, history and geography. The competition included schools from across Central Queensland, St Brendan’s College, Glenmore State School, North Rockhampton State High, The Cathedral College, Rockhampton Grammar School, Rockhampton State High, Emmaus College, and Heights College.

Our team has been working together in the senior competition over the last three years, and with our efficient and effective teamwork we swiftly and correctly answered questions in team, individual and beat the buzzer rounds. In the preliminary round we came second with a close 19-20 against St Brendan’s College, however multiple teams placed with 19 points meaning we had to go into face offs. In the face offs we narrowly avoided elimination beating RGS 3-2, we then went on to vs St Brendan’s in the semi-finals and smashed them. This led us to our final against Glenmore State School, where in a tense beat the buzzer round, we fell behind a little, however were able to recover. Unfortunately, this wasn’t enough, and our final result was a close second to Glenmore 17-19.

We would all like to thank the North Rockhampton Rotary Club for hosting this event; our senior team has thoroughly enjoyed participating each year, and it is a well anticipated event we will all miss. We would also like to especially thank Ms Veronica Miller-Waugh, our team nominator who has supported and believed in us over the past few years, we couldn’t do it without you!
