Athletics Carnival

It was a beautiful day at the CQ University oval on Tuesday for the annual RGGS Interhouse Athletics Carnival. It was great to see so many students attending and getting involved in events, with over 280 students in attendance. There were some very impressive performances that gathered quite large crowds, particularly in the high jump and sprint races. It was great to see the students motivating each other to get every last bit of effort into their attempts. What was even more heart-warming was seeing high school girls leading a group of lower primary students to their events and assisting them with their technique.

I would like to send a massive thank you each and every staff member that assisted with set up, running an event, recording, announcing, time keeping, and all the student helpers and parents that assisted to keep events moving along swiftly. Without you all, this event would not have been possible.

Unfortunately, with such large student numbers we ran out of time for the relays and the much anticipated gift. These two events will be held at the RGGS oval in Week 1 of Term 3, then final House points and Age Champions will be awarded on assembly.

Students selected to represent Girls Grammar at the District Athletics Carnival will be notified early in Term 3. This carnival will take place at North Rockhampton SHS on 1 and 2 August.

Interschool Netball Finals

Interschool Netball wrapped up for another year last week. On Thursday, our 8C netball team made the Semi Finals and had the tough job of trying to win their way into the Grand Final for Friday. Our girls were valiant but went down fighting against a very good TCC team. With no subs, the girls showed grit and determination to work for each other and drive the ball down court. There were some great passages of play and amazing intercepts, but unfortunately the final score was 15-7 to TCC.

Sport does not happen without volunteers and officials, and I am very proud to say that we have some wonderful volunteers at Girls Grammar. Throughout the Interschool competition Stacey, Ally, Georgia, Matilda, Dale, Bria and Sophie volunteered their time to undertake the RGGS umpiring duties. On behalf of the Girls Grammar interschool teams, thank you for your efforts each week. Ally went one step further with her umpiring and was selected by the RDS convenor to umpire a Semi Final game on Thursday. She did such a great job that she was again selected to umpire a Grand Final game on Friday. Ally was also awarded the Girls Grammar most valuable umpire from the RDS committee. Well done Ally.

The 7C interschool netball team played their Grand Final early due to the regular final’s week clashing with the State 12s carnival in Townsville. With the culmination of the Interschool Competition, we have finally received their medallions and were able to present these on assembly this week.

Just to recap, the girls won their Grand Final 35-7 against Rockhampton SHS on Thursday 2 June. Stacey was awarded Coaches Award and Taylah was awarded the Grand Final Most Valuable Player.
