Learn to Row Program
Last Saturday was the first week of the Girls Grammar Learn to Row program at the Fitzroy River. It was fabulous to see seven new girls taking advantage of the experience and getting guidance from our current Girls Grammar rowing squad members, Ella, Georgia, and Chloe.
The program will run for four weeks, where the prospective rowers will learn the correct rowing techniques and practice boat handling as they get a taste of what rowing is all about. The aim of the program is to provide a fun, safe environment for aspiring rowers to test out the sport and see if they like it prior to having to commit to the RGGS Rowing team fulltime. We would love to grow our squad for the 2023 rowing season and build on the success achieved in 2022.
We would like to thank the Rockhampton Fitzroy Rowing Club and Kim Byrne for all their time and effort to provide these great opportunities for our girls.
Why take up rowing?
Rowing can improve stamina and overall fitness and strength, including strengthening the heart. It can also boost immune system function, improve mood, and even provide a calming effect on the mind due to its repetitive movement and meditative sounds. Rowing helps build better posture and is low-impact, so it’s great for people who have joint issues that aren’t suited to other sports. It’s a whole body workout that also teaches teamwork and discipline.
When joining the Girls Grammar Rowing team, there are events for all levels of competitors from 500m novice races, 1km intermediate races and 2km championship races. School regattas also have races in year levels, which you can compete in as a single skull, or better yet, be a part of a double or quad team.
If rowing sounds like the sport for you, we may offer another Learn to Row program in Term 1 if there is enough interest. If you would like to take part in future Learn to Row programs in 2023, please contact Sport@rggs.qld.edu.au to register your interest.
