Spanish students from Years 9-12 finished Term 2 with a Spanish cooking immersive class. This session combined language learning with culinary skills, allowing students to explore Spanish and culture through their cuisines. Students researched the ingredients and the steps and created the recipe to follow in the kitchen. The kitchen became a dynamic classroom where language and culture blended seamlessly with the students giving the instructions in the target language: corta, fríe, añade... This immersive approach helped students practice their speaking and listening skills in a real-world context, making the learning process more engaging and effective.
We worked in different groups to cook a variety of traditional Spanish and Latin American dishes. Year 10 students prepared paella, the iconic Spanish dish from Valencia, while Year 11 was in charge of tortilla, the Spanish omelette. Students from Years 9 and 12 made burritos originating from Mexico. Lastly, another group of Year 9 students prepared dessert: Tarta de Santiago, a traditional almond cake from the north of Spain decorated with the Cross of Saint James.
The Spanish immersion cooking class was an opportunity for students to discover the rich cultural of the Spanish-speaking world. This practical application of language skills helped them to build confidence and fluency in a fun environment. Moreover, the class fostered a sense of community and teamwork. Students worked together to prepare meals, learning to cooperate and communicate effectively in Spanish.
We would also like to thank Ms Alley for her help and assistance in setting up the activity.
¡Muy rico!
