UQ Women in Engineering Inspire Rockhampton Girls Grammar Students: Cookie Challenge

Year 10 Career Education

The University of Queensland attended the Year 10 Careers Education class in Week 4. They talked about all the engineering opportunities available at UQ. Some of the courses available were chemical, civil, software, electrical, mechanical and mechatronic (combination of mechanical, electrical and software).  Engineering is a very widespread career, with opportunities to travel and study. Majority of occupations need an engineer, so the demand is always high. Mikala and Nina are both currently progressing in their chosen engineering course. Mikala is doing a dual degree of chemical/science and Nina is completing her mechanical engineering degree, specialising in aerospace.  They explained their choice of engineering and its importance in society, saying it is an option for everyone.

Demonstrating the engineering processes of mining and mineral separating, we were given the task of separating the chocolate chips from cookies. The procedures used varied slightly from each group but can be visioned as processes used in the mining field. After we completed the cookie challenge, we were given a virtual tour of the university campus and facilities. It was very interesting to see what a day in the life of a university student could be. Nina and Mikala also discussed the importance of work, study and life balance in the duration of university; saying it is an experience to be treasured and enjoyed but also important to care about yourself and others by creating new memories and friends.

The UQ ambassadors promoted women in engineering, mentioning the scholarships and opportunities available. Increasing the percentage of women in engineering improves lives and safety of everyone. It was intriguing to learn that women weren’t overly included in the research side of crash testing in motor vehicles leading to women being 17% more likely to die in a car crash compared to a man.

Everyone included in the experience enjoyed what we did and learnt the skills required to be an engineer and are considering it as a future pathway.

Year 11 Presentation

On the 5 August, Year 11 had a visit from Women in Engineering organised by UQ.

During our zoom meeting we meet with Mikala Murphy and Nina Raguz who are both a part of the Women in Engineering Student Leader program and current engineering students. Through the virtual discussion we learnt about opportunities for women in the engineering industry and how Mikala and Nina’s jobs work from day to day. We wanted to thank UQ, Mikala and Nina for giving us this opportunity and taking the time to talk to us about Women in Engineering.
