The recent two-day Year 10 Retreat offered students a powerful opportunity to step outside the classroom and into an environment focused on personal growth, wellbeing, and future planning. The program was designed to equip students with practical tools to help them navigate the remainder of high school with resilience, self-awareness and a greater sense of direction.
Day 1 featured three impactful sessions. The day began with a Brainwise workshop led by educational neuroscientist Judi Newman. Students explored the science of how memory works, along with strategies for emotional regulation – skills essential for managing stress and performing well academically. Following this, students engaged in a session with DP Students Kathy King, who provided insights into the journey through senior school. This session encouraged students to begin considering subject selection, goal setting, and the steps required to achieve success in Years 11 and 12. Students also engaged with a deeply grounding experience at Wellness on William, where students were guided through breathwork and cold water immersion activities. This session focused on stress management, resilience, and connecting with the inner self – a highlight for many.
Day 2 took a more relaxed and social approach, with a full-day trip to Great Keppel Island. The day included a glass bottom boat tour, offering a unique glimpse into the rich marine environment of the Southern Great Barrier Reef. Students participated in team-building activities designed to strengthen collaboration and peer support, followed by time to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the island.
The retreat left students feeling inspired, connected and better prepared for the journey ahead. It was a meaningful experience that will no doubt have a lasting impact on the cohort’s mindset and motivation as they move into their senior years.
