A Season of Sporting Excellence: Celebrating Girls Grammar Achievements in Variety of Sports

Rockhampton Secondary Schools Championship Regatta

Our final local regatta of the year took place on Saturday, showcasing the culmination of our team's dedication and hard work throughout the season. Despite being a small squad, our mighty team has been training diligently, hitting the water four afternoons a week, plus Saturday mornings. Additionally, some of our senior girls have been putting in extra effort with early morning ergo sessions in the gym every Tuesday.

In the Year 9 Mixed Double event, Lilian and Maya impressed by securing 3rd place while competing against the boys. The success continued in the Year 9 Single race, where Maya claimed 2nd place and Lilian followed closely behind in 3rd.

The crew consisting of Miley, Eleanor, Maya, and Lillian, expertly coxed by Kirsten, delivered a strong performance by finishing 4th in the Year 9 Mixed Quad. Miley and Eleanor also teamed up in the Novice Double, achieving a commendable 4th place, and later joined forces with girls from TCC in the Novice Quad to earn 3rd place.

Usually partners in competition, Calli and Georgia faced off in the Schoolgirls Single, with Calli taking 1st place and Georgia securing 2nd. Demonstrating versatility, Calli also competed in the Schoolboys Double alongside her Emmaus teammate, where they achieved a notable 2nd place finish.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the prestigious 'Queens of the River' race. After dominating the event in 2023, Calli and Georgia were determined to defend their title in their final year as Girls Grammar rowers. They started strong and maintained an impressive lead, ultimately crossing the finish line well ahead of the competition. We are proud to announce that your 2024 Queens of the River are, once again, Calli McRae and Georgia Brennan. Congratulations, girls!

Adding to their list of accomplishments, Calli and Georgia have been selected for the Capricornia Rowing Team and will represent Girls Grammar at the QLD Schools Championship Regatta at Wyaralong Dam from 14-16 September, marking their last ever school regatta.

We look forward to potentially welcoming both girls back in 2025 as coaches, where they can share their extensive knowledge and experience with the next generation of Girls Grammar rowers.

Well done to all our athletes for an incredible season!

Club Netball Finals

It's been an incredible year for our netball teams, with the season kicking off as far back as February. We fielded 10 teams this year, representing both junior and senior divisions, ranging from our 7-year-olds to our 18-year-olds. Despite being a small school with a modestly sized club, we’ve punched well above our weight, with 50% of our teams making it to the semi-finals last week - a remarkable achievement for our community.

But what's better than having five teams in the semi-finals, you ask? The answer: having five teams advance to the preliminary finals! Out of our three teams in the elimination semi-finals, all emerged victorious, securing their spots in the next round. Although our two teams in the major semi-finals faced tough losses, finishing in the top two during the regular season earned them a second chance in the preliminary finals.

On Monday, our teams - Nova, Jupiter, and Mercury - left everything on the court. Nova and Jupiter came out strong, quickly taking early leads. Despite their valiant efforts, both teams were defeated in the second half, ending their seasons in heartbreaking fashion, with a few tears shed at the final whistle.

Mercury, however, delivered a nail-biter. The cheers from the crowd echoed throughout Jardine Park as they clinched a thrilling 17-16 victory, earning them a spot in Sunday's Grand Final. Sophie Hauwert displayed incredible game awareness, perfectly timing her defensive moves to neutralise the opposing shooters. Isabella Hutton, typically a powerhouse in the mid-court, stepped up as Goal Shooter, learning to navigate the circle with impressive speed. Emma Jackson, usually our dominant shooter, took on the Centre position for the entire match - a first-time strategy that the coaches wish they had tried earlier in the season. We couldn't be prouder of how the girls have grown and developed over the course of this season.

In Tuesday night’s games, Galaxy faced a challenging comeback, trailing by more than five points late in the third quarter. A few strategic positional changes saw them regain their rhythm and dominate the fourth quarter, ultimately securing a 47-33 victory over Frenchville. Ellie-Mai Brandenburg played across multiple positions, stabilising the game when needed. Sophie Shaw excelled in the mid-court, delivering precise feeds that set our shooters up for success. Tylah Mitchell and Georgia Priddle were a seamless duo in the defensive circle, working together as if they were reading each other’s minds, while Ralema Genaia showcased her shooting prowess from all over the circle.

Meanwhile, Eclipse delivered a commanding performance, overwhelming Brothers with a 43-7 victory. It was a true team effort, with Audrey Lehman, Ava Hinchliffe, and Porsha Lowien demonstrating remarkable shooting accuracy. Charli Roberts, Alissa Fort, and Charlotte Curtis bolstered the mid-court with excellent drives, while Sierra and Claire dominated the defensive end, consistently securing rebounds and turnovers, leaving Brothers without a chance.

These teams are now set to compete in the Grand Finals this Sunday. As always, we’d love to see a strong Girls Grammar crowd at Jardine Park to cheer our teams on to victory. Keep an eye on the Girls Grammar Facebook page for game times, and let's bring home the win!

Primary School Interschool Sport - Hockey and Netball

In the Primary Interschool Sport this term we had Year 5 and 6 students playing netball and hockey.

The netball teams have had great success this season with the Year 6 team playing an incredible semi-final, going down by just one point in a nail-biting match.

The girls showed outstanding skill, teamwork, and determination, giving it their all on the court.

Even though they were undefeated all season, it just wasn’t meant to be. On a fabulous note, they were voted as the nicest team to play by all the other schools. We are all so proud of their effort and spirit!

A huge congratulations to our Year 5 E and C netball teams for their convincing semi-final wins! Both teams have shown remarkable improvement throughout the season, and their hard work has clearly paid off. Both teams fought hard in their grand final games, showing their determination and growth. Congratulations to the 5C team on their nail-biting 1-point win. Great work girls!

It's been incredible to witness the tremendous improvement in our Primary Interschool Hockey team. Remarkably, all but one of the students were new to the sport, yet their teamwork, enthusiasm, and growing understanding of the game have been truly commendable.

Club Oztag Finals

The second season of club Oztag came to a bittersweet end on Monday night. After a fantastic season filled with new players and significant player development, both of our Girls Grammar teams advanced to the semi-finals of the Rockhampton ladies' competition.

The RGGS Hashtags team made remarkable progress this season. They played with joy and enthusiasm, always bringing smiles to the field. Their sportsmanship and encouragement were so outstanding that opposing teams loved playing against them. On Monday, they delivered a strong performance but narrowly lost in a close 4-3 match.

The RGGS Hipsters faced a tough challenge in the combined A/B grade competition. These ladies made our school proud with their unwavering effort. Unfortunately, disaster struck when the Oztag and Netball finals were scheduled at the same time, leaving three players with a difficult choice. Despite being three players down, the team showed incredible resilience, giving their best effort but ultimately falling short in a hard-fought 3-5 game.

A big thank you goes to Miss Graham and Zara Priddle for their outstanding coaching and support throughout the season.

Interschool Football

This term, our fearless interschool football team has been competing in the Senior B division across Rockhampton. With a lineup that includes many junior players, our girls performed exceptionally well.

Throughout the term, they played six round games and secured four impressive wins. The highlight of the season was a dominant 12-0 victory over Grammar in round 2. To secure a spot in the grand final, we needed not only a win in the last round but also for the two teams ahead of us on the ladder to lose. Despite our strong 6-1 victory, the other teams also won, leaving us in 3rd place for the season.

Congratulations to our football girls for a fantastic effort, and a huge thanks to Mrs Whitehand for her expert coaching and unwavering encouragement.
