A Term in Boarding: Reflections from Ms Mitchell

ree

Stepping into the boarding space over the past term has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. Traditionally, my role has focused on operations and logistics, important work, no doubt, but it hasn’t always allowed for deeper connections with the students and families who make our boarding and school community so special. This role has changed that for me.

I’ve been genuinely warmed by the relationships I’ve built with the girls and their families. Whether it’s a chat in the common room, watching them try something new, simply listening, or sharing in their laughter, these moments have brought real clarity and purpose to what we do here. Boarding is not just a place to stay; it’s a home where the girls grow, challenge themselves, and form friendships that will last a lifetime.

That sense of connection has only deepened through the vibrant activities we’ve introduced this term. From movement to marshmallows, the energy has been infectious. Pilates and Zumba sessions have become fast favourites, with the girls diving into the fun and embracing the challenge, though I must admit, the sore walks back to the dorms and dramatic complaints have been just as entertaining as the workouts themselves. Our fire-pit night was another standout, filled with laughter, sticky fingers, and s’mores under the stars. The joy was contagious, and many photos were taken to capture those memories.

We also ventured out for a weekend beach trip, where the girls built sandcastles, swam, and played endless outdoor games. It was heartwarming to see them unwind and enjoy each other’s company in such a carefree way. Back on campus, the refreshed tennis courts have sparked a new wave of enthusiasm. Regular matches and informal lessons, often led by the students themselves—have turned the courts into a hub of activity, competitiveness, and camaraderie.

One of the most memorable highlights this term was our social evenings with St Brendan’s and St Ursula’s Colleges. Split across two nights, one for Years 7, 8, and 9, and another for Years 10 and 11, the events were packed with games like Knights, Mounts & Cavaliers, Limbo, and Four Corners. Prizes were up for grabs throughout, but the real excitement came during the infamous war cry showdown between Girls Grammar and St Brendan’s. While we narrowly missed victory in the younger years' social, the older girls rallied and claimed the win with pride and passion.

These experiences have reminded me why boarding matters so much. It’s about creating an environment where the girls feel connected, supported, and inspired to make the most of their time here. I’m excited to build on this momentum and continue shaping a space where every girl feels seen, heard, and empowered.

While I’m genuinely enjoying every moment in boarding, I also know this chapter is temporary. But in this period, my hope is simple: to make even the smallest mark. If, years from now, the girls return and find themselves reminiscing, laughing and saying, “Remember that time we had Ms Mitchell as our dormo?” then I’ll know I’ve done something right. That would mean the world to me.
