At Girls Grammar we value kindness in our girls and we encourage them to be kind to each other and to themselves. Being kind requires us to be courageous and strong. It is a crucial social skill particularly in boarding. Research is now showing that devoting resources to others, rather than having more for yourself brings about lasting well-being. The reason it is vital in the boarding scenario is a sense of community is created when people are kind to those who need help. Acts of kindness can be small, a kind word, a smile, helping someone carry something. Giving honest compliments, refusing to gossip and sending an email to thank someone are all ways to practice kindness. Kindness is being openly happy for someone when they are experiencing success. It is important for us to be kind to ourselves as well – is our self-talk kind and do we take good care of ourselves? In our boarding community we will continue to encourage kindness amongst our girls. There are many ways to be kind and many opportunities to practice. In a society where people are often trolling others and tearing them down, it is important that we are accountable for our actions and call people out for these behaviours. We believe that kindness will strengthen relationships amongst our boarding community.
Have a fabulous weekend and let’s keep our eyes open for opportunities to practice kindness.
