Hello everyone, my name is Sammy, and I want to take this opportunity, my first article in the weekly newsletter as Deputy Principal – Students, to introduce myself.
Having started life in Longreach and going to an all-girls school in Toowoomba, I have a great appreciation for the bush and for girls’ education. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have grown up surrounded with wide-open spaces, horses, cattle, and dogs; and even more fortunate to be involved in the family horse sport of Polocrosse. I have fond memories as a family spending long nights in the truck getting to carnivals, early mornings braiding horse tails (and charging my brother the price of a cup of hot chippies to do his horses tail as well), and the military like way Dad taught us to pack the truck so that everything would fit, like Tetris!
With a long family history in the Agricultural Industry, I was drawn to go into this industry myself. I studied a Bachelor of Applied Sciences, with an extended major in Production Animal Science. From here I decided that I wanted to share my passion for, and knowledge of, Agriculture and was accepted to complete a postgraduate in Secondary Education. I finished my study and started my teaching career in Mount Isa. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the Isa; some of my fondest memories being that of the Boulia camel races, the ‘Isa Rodeo’, and travelling north to explore Lawn Hill Gorge.
I said good-bye to Mount Isa, and moved to Rockhampton, where it now feels like home.
The classroom, and agriculture will forever be dear to my heart, however, I always knew my professional career was bound to move into the Pastoral Care space. I get a great sense of purpose from supporting and fostering students, and being at Girls Grammar has allowed me to not only develop my skills in this area, but to provide this support to bolster the wellbeing of the girls. Fast forward to now, I am honoured and privileged to be the new Deputy Principal – Students. I aim to continue to provide a high level of care and support to our students, whilst working closely with our parents and teachers.
