STEAM Club 2023 has welcomed new participants this year and we have been busy with various challenges and investigations.
Term 1 saw construction challenges aplenty: spaghetti buildings and bridges, elevators and creating Lego instructions. Many designs were created and tested within specific parameters. Students have explored the elements and foundations of construction principles and demonstrated the importance of clear and concise instructions. The challenges also fostered a somewhat competitive atmosphere and many groups felt urgency to perform.
Term 2 focused on Careers in Health. We were visited by CQU and JCU; both universities explaining entry conditions to various study options and clarifying career opportunities. Past student, 2022 Dux, Mirae Ries returned to speak to the group about her experiences within the CQU Bachelor Of Medical Science (Pathway To Medicine). She made it clear that expectations at university were much higher than at school, and yes you did need to study…lots!!
STEAM Club also welcomed Dr Helen Wiltshire. Dr Helen is a GP at True and she discussed with the group her experiences in electing to study medicine and her interest in Women’s Health. She also brought some activities for the students to engage with. They learnt how to take blood pressure using a sphygmomanometer, tested some ‘urine’, tested hearing and listened to their own heartbeats and breathing with a stethoscope. Furthermore, this unit allowed students to explore using aseptic techniques when pouring agar plates for microbiological testing. This covered the importance of correct handwashing techniques.
Keep an eye out for all the exciting adventures of STEAM club during Semester 2.
